Hello All,

Does anyone have a good recipe for low fire slip used to slip cast in a plaster mold?

Hello Garmin,

Can you check your recipes. These are the results I am getting. I had to add extra water (about twice the amount in your recipe). Then the slip would not dry in the mold. Even after a full 24 hours, the slip was still soft in the mold.

Any tips?

Here is the picture of the slip mix before the extra water.

RE:Low Fire Slip Recipe?

Hi Katie,

That is the recipe. Depending on the ball clay you use, you will need different amounts of water.

Make sure you use the deflocculant (sodium silicate). It will make the mixture runny (it will seem wetter than it is. This will help with drying in the mold).

RE:Low Fire Slip Recipe?

Hi Katie,

Here is a low fire slip recipe I have used in the past. It is ok.

I have had the best results using pre-mixed slip.

OM4 Ball Clay - 100
Tennessee Ball SPG - 100
Talc - 300
Soda Ash - 0.25
Barium Carbonate - 3
Sodium Silicate - No more than a TableSpoon. As the mixture gets thick start adding it slowly.

Add the above mix to warm or hot water.
