Using the wheel

I'm new at using the potter's wheel and I was wondering if there is an easy way to determine when you are inserting your fingers to make the opening in your pot, how do you know how far to go down with your fingers so that you do not go down too far and either put a hole in the clay or making the bottom too thin. Thanks.

RE:Using the wheel

I always open up with my left thumb and a small sponge on top. I push in a little less than I think. To meassure if the opening is close enough to the wheel head, I make a U shape with my thumb and pointer finger. then I get them level and put my finger in the openeing. I look at my thumb on the outside to see how much clay is left.

I will post some pictures tomorrow.

Use a Pin

Hello,

When I started throwing I would use a pin to check the thickness at the bottom. Just stick the pin in the bottom until it hits the wheel. Pull it out and you know how much clay is left. When you use a pin, the hole is so small that you can easily push it out and it makes no difference. Make sure to use a real pin not a needle tool. The needle tool is too thick. Also be careful not to loose the pin in loose clay….OUCH!!!

When you get the correct thickness make sure to really look at the bottom and at the wheel. This is how you will train your brain to know the correct thickness. After a while it is automatic.

Good luck with the wheel! I know that you will love it!

RE:Using the wheel

The best way to solve this problem......practice.

Try throwing 30 pots in one hour. Do it quick and dirty. At the end of the hour your brain will know how to center...know the bottom.....be able to push the clay to the limit.
